Biomass Utilization in Stationary Heat & Power Systems: RD&D Activities at Penn State’s Energy Institute

This presentation summarizes research, development, and demonstration activities at Penn State's Energy Institute investigating biomass characterization and utilization in stationary combustion systems. Examples of industry/ government/ university collaborations will be presented in which a wide range of biomass feedstocks (e.g., woody biomass, native grasses, crop oils, animal fats, proteins, and tissue, manure and litter, and biodiesel) have been studied in commercial boilers, a pilot-scale fluidized-bed combustor, and a residential stove.
