Catalysis is an important research aspect for converting biomass-derived liquids to clean fuels and hydrogen. A brief overview will be presented on the role of heterogeneous catalysis for converting lignocellulosic biomass-derived liquids from pyrolysis or liquefaction (bio-oils) to liquid transportation fuels, and for converting the bio-ethanol to hydrogen for fuel cell applications. Some recent catalytic research at Penn State will be discussed as well.
